On January 10, 2008, JCDI implemented a pilot empowerment project targeting 22 widows caring for orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) in Sokoto North LGA. Each widow received ₦10,000 to either start a small business or expand an existing one, giving them a pathway out of poverty.

The widows were also trained in simple business methods, such as record keeping, savings, and customer service. This ensured that the financial support translated into long-term income-generating opportunities rather than short-term relief.

Beyond economic empowerment, the project provided psychosocial support to widows, helping them build resilience and dignity. For the children under their care, the project meant improved access to food, education, and healthcare.

This initiative demonstrated JCDI’s commitment to supporting vulnerable households, with a dual focus on economic empowerment and child welfare. It was recognized by the Ministry of Social Welfare and Culture, which further reinforced JCDI’s role in social protection in Sokoto State.
