TB House-to-House Active Case Finding (CTWs)

From January 2016 to December 2017, JCDI implemented a house-to-house TB active case finding project in Sokoto North LGA. Funded by the Global Fund through ARFH and TB Network, the initiative trained and deployed Community Tuberculosis Workers (CTWs) to identify TB cases that might otherwise go undetected.

The project took TB detection beyond health facilities and into households, particularly in underserved communities where access to clinics was limited. CTWs educated families on TB symptoms, encouraged those with persistent coughs to seek testing, and referred suspected cases to designated diagnostic centers.

This proactive approach dramatically improved case detection rates and reduced the time between symptom onset and treatment initiation. It also helped in breaking the chain of transmission by ensuring that individuals with TB were quickly linked to treatment.

The success of this project highlighted the importance of community-based case finding in achieving national TB control goals. It also strengthened JCDI’s capacity to mobilize, train, and manage large teams of community volunteers in health interventions.
