The Scaling up of Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) project was implemented in Wurno and Rabah LGAs of Sokoto State under the sponsorship of FHI360 and Alive & Thrive (A&T). The project recognized the urgent need to address malnutrition, which remains one of the leading contributors to maternal and child mortality in northern Nigeria. By focusing on the first 1,000 days of life—from conception to two years of age—the project aimed to improve maternal nutrition, early initiation of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding, and appropriate complementary feeding practices.

JCDI played a critical role in mentoring and coaching healthcare workers on how to deliver quality counselling during antenatal and postnatal sessions. The training sessions emphasized not just the technical aspects of nutrition but also the importance of empathy, cultural sensitivity, and practical guidance for mothers. Health workers were better equipped to guide pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and adolescent girls on the importance of proper nutrition for themselves and their children.

Community outreach formed a major part of the project. Awareness sessions were held at health facilities, markets, and community gatherings, where JCDI staff and volunteers educated women and families on nutrition, hygiene, and early childhood care practices. By involving local leaders, religious authorities, and community health volunteers, the project gained acceptance and fostered behavior change across multiple households.

The MIYCN scale-up project demonstrated that with the right partnerships, training, and community engagement, it is possible to improve nutrition outcomes in some of the most underserved areas of Sokoto State. The initiative concluded in June 2024, leaving behind strengthened health systems, empowered mothers, and a cadre of health workers who will continue to champion nutrition and maternal health in their communities.
